    Fire Academy #2017-28

    Course Description: The Fire Academy delivers the Commonwealth of Virginia certified Firefighter Level I and Level II, Hazardous Materials Operations.  Firefighter I-(9/6/2017) An entry level course for new firefighters. Course consists of a combination of classroom study, scenarios and modular practical experiences that will prepare the firefighter to carry out most fireground functions under the direct supervision of an officer or experienced firefighter. The scenarios are designed to train the student in realistic fireground operations. Firefighter II – (2/14/2018) A course designed for the Firefighter I who is prepared to assume more of a leadership role in a department. Course consists primarily of classes designed to give the student more knowledge of fireground situations so that he or she can make basic evaluations of safety problems and assume leadership roles in carrying out interior attack and search operations. Hazardous Materials Operations is required to prepare the students to participate in defensive leak and spill control operations.


    Prerequisites: Students must be at least 16 years of age in order to complete all aspects of the course. Junior Firefighters must comply with all Junior Firefighters pre-requisites as defined by Department of Labor and Industry standards. If you are under the age of 18 by the start of class you and your guardian must complete a Parent Guardian consent form to be turned in before the class starts on 9/06/2017. Students who do not complete the Parent Guardian consent form will be denied access to the course. To obtain a copy of the Parent guardian consent form please go to: Parental Consent


    Equipment Required: Full turnout gear including SCBA.

    DATES:   First Class is for FFI is Sept.6 , 2017.  Mondays, Wednesdays and EVERY OTHER Saturday (starts Saturday, 09/09/2017– 09:00-17:00)

    CPR is a PRE-Requisite for this course.  All Participants in this course MUST ATTEND the CPR Course on  SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2017.  registration for cpr is separate from emt.

    Course Description: The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Program is the basis for all higher levels of certification in Virginia. This program provides general instruction in all areas of human body systems and initial care for a wide range of medical conditions.

    Class Hours:  59 hours of physical classroom and skills instruction and 10 hours of clinical observation in a pre-hospital setting; remainder of course will be completed online.

    Course Schedule

    Special Note:  Students MUST be 16 years of age by the first night of class and be proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English.  Internet access is required.

    TO ENROLL IN THIS COURSE YOU MUST AT MINIMUM BE AN EMT 

               These comprehensive courses are designed for providers who are first to evaluate and stabilize the trauma patient. The courses provide complete training in the skills needed for rapid assessment, resuscitation, stabilization and transportation of trauma patients.

    The ITLS Basic course provides the core of knowledge and skills appropriate for all levels of EMS personnel, including EMTs, EMRs, and other technicians.

    The ITLS Advanced course builds on this knowledge, emphasizing evaluation steps and sequencing as well as techniques for resuscitating and packaging patients. ITLS Advanced is appropriate for advanced EMTs, paramedics, trauma nurses, physicians and other advanced EMS personnel. Hands-on stations include:

    • Patient assessment and management
    • Basic and advanced airway management
    • Needle chest decompression and fluid resuscitation
    • Spinal motion restriction — rapid extrication, short back board, helmet managment, log roll, and long back board/ scoop stretcher utilization
    • Extremity immobilization and traction splint application

    ITLS Basic and Advanced courses use the 8th edition ITLS for Prehospital Care Providers manual.

    ATTENTION FAUQUIER STUDENTS: If you fail to attend this course after registering, your individual fire rescue company will be responsible for the $200.00 course fee per the Special Operations group.

    Course Description: Classroom and practical hands-on training covers planning, medical considerations, rescue equipment, self-rescue and shore-based rescue techniques. Course meets or exceeds NFPA 1670 operator level guidelines.

    The Water Rescue and Emergency Response Course covers planning for water emergencies, dynamics of moving water, medical conditions, personal safety, and fundamental rescue techniques (self and shore based rescue).

The minimum age for attending any water rescue course is 18 years-of-age. Swift water awareness is a prerequisite for this course and can be taken online at Water Rescue for the First Responder Awareness or Swiftwater & Flood Rescue Awareness


    Special Note: Students enrolled in swift water programs must be prepared to engage in strenuous activities in extreme weather and water conditions. If a student has a known medical condition that could foreseeably jeopardize his/her safety during participation or be aggravated by participation, the student should not participate. 

    The program is designed to train fire, rescue, police, park and other emergency services personnel. The minimum age for attending any water rescue course is 18 years-of-age. Swift water awareness is a prerequisite for this course and can be taken online.   

    This course and will include a swim test (100 yards), skills evaluation, and written test.

    All sections must be passed to achieve certification.

    Required Equipment: A U.S. Coast Guard approved (type III or V) personal flotation device (PFD), water rescue helmet, gloves, shoes, throw bag, and appropriate clothing for water and weather conditions
